• Vice Chairman of the House Education and the Workforce Committee. • Successful in bringing more competition to the federal student loan program through creation of the Direct Loan program – increasing opportunities while lowering costs for the American taxpayer. • Sponsor of the bipartisan Student Aid Reward Act to encourage more savings in the student loan program – with more funds available for Pell Grants and deficit reduction at no additional cost to the taxpayer. • Strengthened the Troops to Teachers Program to encourage retiring military to become teachers – over 9,000 are now in our classrooms across the country. • Won passage of proposal to speed specialized textbooks and other learning materials to sight-impaired students. |
