• Senior member of the House Education and Labor Committee. • Successful in bringing more competition to the federal student loan program through creation of the Direct Loan program – increasing opportunities while lowering costs for the American taxpayer. • Sponsor of the bipartisan Student Aid Reward Act to encourage more savings in the student loan program – with more funds available for Pell Grants and deficit reduction at no additional cost to the taxpayer.  |
 • Strengthened the Troops to Teachers Program to encourage retiring military to become teachers – over 9,000 are now in our classrooms across the country. • Won passage of proposal to speed specialized textbooks and other learning materials to sight-impaired students. • Republican champion of provisions in the 2007 College Cost Reduction Act, signed into law in 2007, to cut billions in wasteful subsidies to lenders and devote savings to student aid. • Introduced bill in 2007 to give states more flexibility in testing under No Child Left Behind, earning praise from local educators as well as from the national media. |
